Going beyond the classroom with NexTech Robotics

Unleash your inner innovator with NexTech Robotics! Originally created by an inspired UC Merced undergraduate in Computer Science, the NexTech program and its undergraduate student educators teach students the value of teamwork and how to think like an engineer using VEX IQ 2.0 kits. Through a curriculum involving friendly competitions and real-world scenarios, middle and high school students gain a thorough introduction to problem-solving in STEM, exploring concepts like coding, engineering design, and more. The program provides real-world scenarios in ag-tech innovations using case studies and articles from real research projects, providing students with unique insight into the practical applications of robotics in agriculture-related fields.

CITRIS at UC Merced’s innovative computer science and robotics program has been serving San Joaquin Valley middle school students since 2015. CITRIS NexTech Education interns—UC Merced undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering—serve as near-peer mentors to engage the NexTech students and illustrate a pathway to success in higher education.

Robots are fun, creative and present multi-dimensional problems that translate into engineering, math and computer science skills. They’re also a gateway to engage many student interests and skills. Students work independently and in teams to develop computational thinking. Through in-class and after-school sessions NexTech students practice scratch and block coding, learn about sensors, run competitive courses, and solve problems. Students can see themselves succeeding in technology after exploring NexTech Robotics.

NexTech Robotics is free to students, schools, and community-based organizations.
